Shoplifting is now a High Street police priority
Shoplifting was the most commonly recorded offence in Wanstead Village ward in August: 26 of 87 crimes. The local police team has made it a formal High Street priority. We went through the police.uk data for both Wanstead wards and the Met's published priorities.

Shoplifting has been promoted to a formal policing priority on Wanstead High Street, and the latest figures show why. Of 87 crimes recorded in Wanstead Village ward in August 2026, 26 were shoplifting, close to 30%.
At the ward panel meeting on 16 September, the Met's local team and panel residents agreed to swap theft of motor vehicle out of the ward's three priorities and put shoplifting on the High Street in its place. The ward covers the High Street, the Underground station and Christchurch Green, so it's the patch most of us use daily. All figures here come from police.uk and the Met's priorities page for Wanstead Village, and the latest month available is August 2026.
Police.uk reports 1,310 crimes in Wanstead Village ward in the 12 months to August, about 109 a month. Neighbouring Wanstead Park ward had 600. Monthly totals for Wanstead Village ran: September 2025 107, October 107, November 93, December 100, January 104, February 91, March 82, April 134, May 142, June 126, July 137, August 87.
That's a clear step up. April to July averaged about 135 a month, against about 98 from September to March. August fell back to 87, the second-lowest of the 12 months, though police.uk doesn't say why and one month isn't a trend. Wanstead Park's totals are lower and flatter, from 36 in November 2025 to 63 in April 2026, and 55 in August.
August in Wanstead Village, by type:
- Shoplifting: 26 (29.9%)
- Violence and sexual offences: 19 (21.8%)
- Anti-social behaviour: 13 (14.9%)
- Vehicle crime: 11 (12.6%)
- Other theft: 7 (8%)
- Robbery: 3 (3.4%)
- Burglary, public order and other crime: 2 each; bicycle theft and drugs: 1 each
The monthly totals appear to include anti-social behaviour, since the categories only add up to 87 with it, which matters when comparing with sources that report it separately. In Wanstead Park ward, August's 55 records were led by violence and sexual offences (19, 34.5%), then anti-social behaviour (10), shoplifting (7) and vehicle crime (4).
Of the 87 August crimes in Wanstead Village, 39 (44.8%) were closed with "investigation complete; no suspect identified" and 25 (28.7%) were still under investigation. Five were in "unable to prosecute suspect", five awaited a court outcome and 13 were "other". Outcomes keep updating after the month a crime is recorded, so August's picture will change.

The Met's plan
The Wanstead Village Safer Neighbourhoods Team sets three priorities with its ward panel of councillors and residents. The panel last met on 16 September and meets again on Wednesday 9 December. The published priorities:
- Violence and robbery on the High Street. Kept, with the aim to "reduce anti-social behaviour and robberies in Wanstead High Street over the next three months": high-visibility patrols, engagement with targeted shops and plain-clothes deployments.
- Shoplifting on the High Street. The panel "decided to change one of the priorities from theft of motor vehicle to shoplifting offences", with "visible presence", plain-clothes and car deployments and "engagement on the high street for awareness".
- Anti-social behaviour at Christchurch Green. High-visibility patrols at the station in the evening, plain-clothes deployments and "partnership working with BTP" (British Transport Police) "and staff at station".
The Met says success will be judged by "crime data analysis" between panel meetings, and that "resources will also be taken into consideration". There are no numerical targets.
A few cautions on the data. Police.uk counts crimes recorded by police, not all crimes committed, so changes in reporting can move the figures. Ward totals aren't adjusted for footfall, so a ward with a busy High Street and a station will record more than a purely residential one. And the page we used breaks crime down by type only for the latest month, so we can't say which offences drove the April to July rise.
If you'd rather talk to someone, the Met lists two "Cuppa with a Copper" drop-ins with the Wanstead Village team at Costa Coffee: 2pm to 3pm on Thursday 29 October and 3pm to 4pm on Monday 2 November. The listing says only "Costa Coffee, London" and gives no address. To report a crime, call 101, or 999 in an emergency, or use the Met's website.
